What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files, also known as text strings, which are sent to the user’s device. There, they can be deleted at the end of each session, or be stored and saved for the next time the user pays a visit to the website.
Cookies can be generated by “first parties” – i.e. the website’s owners – or by “third parties”, i.e. subjects other than the website’s owners. Cookies make it possible to recognize the accessing device, to track its navigation through the website pages, and to identify the device whenever it accesses the website again.
Cookies are useful in that they make it possible to store the user’s browsing preferences. So, it is possible to customize the website according to the user’s needs, and in general to improve any visitor browsing experience.
Some cookies are both necessary for the correct functioning, and useful for a customized fruition of the website; for these reasons, to inhibit the cookies may compromise some functionalities of the website.
The duration and expiration of cookies and other Tracking Tools may vary, depending on how they have been set by the Owner, or third-party providers. Some cookies expire at the end of the User’s browsing session, others are persistent and last for a longer period.
The user may at any time check the cookie settings, and change it.
Cookies are divided into two macro categories:
– technical cookies: they are utilized for the sole purpose of either carrying out the transmission of a communication on an electronic network, and facilitating -to the strictly necessary extent – the supply of service requested to an information provider. In turn, these kind of cookies are divided into navigation cookies, and functional cookies. Both ensure the normal use of a website, and store the settings made by the user.
– profiling cookies: they are utilized to reconduct specific actions, or behavioral patterns recurring in using the offered functionalities, to specific subjects, either identified or identifiable. These cookies aim to group different profiles in homogeneous clusters, so the owner may provide an add-on personalized service, in a way that exceeds what is strictly necessary for the provision of that service. Thanks to these cookies, the owner may also send targeted advertising messages, in line with the preferences expressed by the user who visits the website.
However, cookies and other tracking tools employed for purposes other than technical ones may be activated only after obtaining the user consent.
The browser offers the possibility to delete cookies (by means of the “delete browsing history” function).
For further information please refer to the help function in the browser settings.
The retention time of any acquired data depends on the cookies employed.
How to turn off cookies (opt-out)
The majority of the Internet browsers are set to automatically accept cookies. This means that the User may, at any time, change the browser’s setting to accept all cookies, only some of them or disable their use by the websites. It is also normally possible to set browser preferences to receive a notification every time a cookie is stored in the computer. At the end of every browsing session, it is also possible to delete the collected cookies from the hard disk. To eliminate cookies installed in the browser’s cookie folder, it is important to remember that every browser has different procedures to manage settings.
